The country’s auto industry has dropped badly due to the Coronavirus. In fact, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), an association of vehicle manufacturers, has published the sales figures for passenger vehicles in March. These figures show that passenger vehicle sales fell by 51 per cent in the last month. Please tell that in the last week of March, the lockdown was implemented across the country.
What the figures assume
- According to SIAM, passenger vehicle sales stood at 1, 43,014 vehicles in March. This is 51 per cent less than the sales of 2, 91,861 vehicles in March last year.
- On the other hand, commercial vehicle sales declined 88.95 per cent to 13,027 vehicles in March from 1, 09,022 vehicles in March last year.
Two-wheeler businesses also hang
Similarly, two-wheeler sales have also fallen in March. Two-wheelers sold a total of 8, 66,849 units in this month, which is 39.83 per cent less than the 14, 40,593 units in March 2019. Sales of all categories of vehicles declined by 44.95 per cent to 10, 50,367 vehicles during the period under review. In March 2019, this figure was 19, 08,097 vehicles.
