There was already a possibility of increasing GST on mobile phones. It was already believed that the central government is preparing to increase the GST rate from 12 to 18 per cent. However, many organizations had demanded the Central Government not to do so.

CAT and All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) sent letters to the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister. There was a demand not to increase GST on mobile phones. The organization argues that currently, the increase in GST will affect the retailers besides the customers. This decision of the central government may be overshadowed by mobile companies. This industry is already suffering from the worldwide coronavirus including China. Due to Corona, work in Chinese companies is stalled, due to which the availability of mobile phones is less.
