An advisory has been issued by the Cyber Co-ordination Center of the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the use of the Zoom video conferencing app which is becoming popular worldwide during the coronavirus lockdown. This advisory has been released to private sector video conferencing and online class providing schools through this app. Indeed, a nationwide lockdown has been announced since March 24 last month. Already, many companies have asked their employees to work from home. In such a situation, this video conferencing app is being widely used in India as well.
This advisory has been issued by the Cyber Co-ordination Center of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs after the data leaks related to this app came to light recently. This advisory has not asked to stop using this app but users have been given some instructions to take precaution. The advisory states that Zoom is not a secure platform so this advisory has been issued.
It clearly states that through this app an undesired entry is happening in the conference room. Keeping this in mind, instructions have been given to change some settings. In particular, the locked meeting has been asked to be administered by the administrator only. Also, caution is advised before sharing the password. According to the advisory issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the following changes have been said in the settings of the app. During each meeting, a new user ID and password have been asked to be created. Create a waiting room in the app so that any user will be able to enter the meeting only when the host permits him to enter.
The hosted feature has been asked to be disabled before hosting a video conference. Alternative host screen sharing settings have been asked to be done in a host only. Remained participants have been asked not to permit rejoining. It is recommended to restrict or disable file transfer. When all participants have joined, it has been advised to lock the meeting. Apart from this, instructions have also been given for restoring the recording feature. What is the Zoom app? Zoom offers quality video, audio, and a wireless screen-sharing performance across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Blackberry, Zoom Rooms, and H. 323 / SIP room systems.
